Macon Bibb Council Chambers
The client, the mayor of Macon Bibb County, found the previous delegate microphone system cumbersome and unresponsive. This job required an individualized interface that was necessary for a specific task, which required extensive user testing feedback.
The Process
Research
I accompanied the sales team to a series of initial meetings with representatives of Macon Bibb County to define user experience expectations to communicate to our engineering department. Throughout these meetings, limitations of the old, standard microphone system became clear. We saw a great opportunity for improvement by providing the client with a new, customized system.
Collaborate
I met with my engineering team to discuss several possibilities of user flow scenarios given the use of different technologies, settling on an ideal configuration of hardware to provide for maximum flexibility in interface customization. This collaboration established pivot points for discussing iterations with the client.
Iterate
Using the architectural drawings as a guide, I created simplified graphical overlays to give the user a sense of place with color-based indicators replacing the old flashing LEDs.
Demonstrate
I proposed an interface layout design mimicking the physical space of the chambers with ‘push-to-unmute’ functionality from multiple room locations. This iteration was revised through direct input from the client, establishing relevant control points at each panel location based on user profiles and responsibilities. Individual panel files were tweaked to reflect these changes in aesthetic and behavior, as each panel logically relied on the others to operate.
Implement
After editing the proposal per client input, I finalized the file to be programmed. The programmed file was installed on the processors at the location after in house testing, and the client began a 90 day testing period.
Improve
I communicated with the client to ensure that the new system was optimal for their daily use over the 90 day testing period. I documented the client’s input for our records, as it could aid in future customized delegate microphone system interfaces. The client was pleased with the result, and my team and I have been brought back to add video functionality to the space.
